WONDER WOMAN - "Raised Star"

WONDER WOMAN - "Raised Star"

This pez was produced in the late 1970's. There were two versions of Wonder Woman made; one with a raised star on her headband and one with a flat star. The Pez pictured here is the no-foot raised star version! I will post the flat star Wonder Woman later in the Blog!

MEXICAN PEZ PAL

MEXICAN PEZ PAL

This Pez was created in the mid 1960's. It comes with a removeable hat, goatee, and earrings. As you can see, I need a goatee and one earring for mine to be considered complete. Despite the fact that my Mexican Pez Pal is not fully accessorized, I am glad to have one in my collection!
If you have the missing parts I need, let me know!

SAILOR

SAILOR

This late 1960's Pez is awesome with its white beard and neat hat! This is a great looking PEZ that always intrigues the viewer to ask, "Who is that? Look at the cool beard!"

COW "A"

COW "A"
Produced in the early 1970's, this PEZ has many different head colors. They say a green colored head is more valuable and rare than any other color version. And it is also noted that the brown headed Cow might be a more rare version as well. I am just happy to have a nice Cow in my collection, I do not care the color! Mooooooving along now....

SPEEDY GONZALES

SPEEDY GONZALES

The first No-Feet PEZ Dispenser of Speedy Gonzales was produced in the late 1970's. Speedy is still being produced today but has a different hat and a red bow tie. I will post a picture of his current dispenser later in the blog!

PONY or PONY-GO-ROUND

This Pez was made in the early 1970's. The Pony Pez can be found in many different color combinations. The more valuable ones to find are the pink, green, and purple headed Pony Pez.

So Giddy-Up and find yourself a Pony Pez!

WOUNDED SOLDIER

WOUNDED SOLDIER
This PEZ was made in the mid-1970's. This PEZ depicts a man with a bandage on his head and a small circle of blood coming through the bandage. The photos here show a little bit of this blood stain, but it is not as noticeable as it should be.

INDIAN CHIEF

INDIAN CHIEF

This PEZ was made in the early 1970's. The headdresses on the Indian Chiefs can be different solid colors and swirls of marble-colors. It is said that the headdresses are made up of melted PEZ Parts from the discontinued "Make-A-Face" Pez dispenser.

BULLWINKLE PEZ

BULLWINKLE PEZ

This Pez was made in the early 1960's. It came on two stem colors, Brown and Yellow. It is said that the brown stem is the harder of the two to find.

I guess I just have to find the yellow stem now!

Too bad they never made a Rocky the Squirrel Pez!

SANTA "A"

SANTA "A" is a gorgeous Pez Dispenser. It is wonderfully done in a milky white color and is a very "Old World" Santa in appearance.

The Santa Claus Pez was first made in 1950 with the full-bodied Santa, and since that first one, there have been 5 other versions. The Santa Pez is very popular and is still being produced today.

FULL-BODIED ROBOT (AKA SPACE TROOPER)

Here is the second of the two Full-bodied Pez Dispensers made in the 1950's. This Pez seems hard to find. it came in several different colors (Red, Blue, Dark Blue, Yellow, Red, and Gold).
I feel honored to have one of these in my collection.

FULL-BODIED SANTA CLAUS

Full-Bodied Santa Claus

The very first pez dispensers did NOT have character heads on them. These head-less PEZ Dispensers were referred to as "Regulars" by collectors of Pez Dispensers.

In 1952, Pez-HAAS opened up their New York City Office and came up with the idea of placing character heads on the dispensers. This is when they added fruit-flavored Pez candies to their mix. (It used to be mint flavored only).

The first character PEZ created was the Full-Bodied Santa Claus in the mid 1950's. This first Santa had a full-body where the details included Santa's black boots and red coat. The word "PEZ" was placed across his chest.

This is a highly sought after PEZ Dispenser and there is also a full-bodied Robot Pez Dispenser(aka Spacetrooper) that was created before they changed to just character heads upon the rectangle Pez stem that we recognize in our stores today!

POPEYE "A"

POPEYE "A"

As far as I understand, this Popeye was The Pez Company's first licensed Pez Character. Previous to this Pez, they made a Full Bodied Santa, a Santa Face, an Easter Bunny, a Halloween Witch, and an Astronaut.

Do you remember seeing these as a kid in the 1950's?

LITTLE RONNIE!

LITTLE RONNIE - A Special Gift!
I will never forget the day that "Little Ronnie" came into my life! I was a mentor coordinator with Big Brothers Big Sisters at the time and I ran school-based mentoring programs in local high schools and elementary/middle schools.
I would give PEZ away as my business card, I would give PEZ to every new mentor that attended my mentor trainings, and I would give every BIG and LITTLE in the program a PEZ at the end of the year celebration.
This end of the year would be different. A co-worker raised money from BBBS Staff, freinds, and mentors. Once the money was collected, an artist was commissioned to make a Pez Dispenser with my face on it. (Hence the name "Little Ronnie").
When I was presented with this PEZ, I was shocked. It was a very touching moment for me because that was such a thoughtful gift to give me. Even though this is not a PEZ made from the PEZ factory, it is one of my most cherished PEZ.
(Note: In collector terms, this is a "Fantasy Pez." This means that the head on the PEZ Stem is not made in any PEZ factory and is not sanctioned by the PEZ Company to be a true Pez Dispenser. The PEZ legal department may not like "Little Ronnie," but it means a lot to me and is a center piece in my collection as a personal favorite).

A BIT OF PEZ HISTORY

The Pez Candy Company, formerly known as the PEZ-HAAS Candy Company, began in 1927 in Vienna, Austria as the world's first breath mint. Edward Haas, a non-smoker, invented the compressed candy with peppermint oil and packaged them in small tins much like we see Altoid mints today.

The name PEZ comes from the first, middle and last letters of the German word for peppermints, which is "pfefferminz." PEZ was marketed as an adult product that catered mostly to smokers. The PEZ Mint would help freshen their mouth and breath. Mr. Haas marketed PEZ mints as an alternative to smoking, often using his slogan of "Smoking Prohibited - Pezzing Allowed."

In 1948, the PEZ Dispenser shape was created to mock a cigarette lighter and was easily placed in a purse or pants pocket. These early "upscale" dispensers did not have character heads as we see them today. The PEZ Company saw moderate success in the European market.

In 1952, Pez-Haas decided to try and sell its product to the United States market. Within 2 years, PEZ-Haas knew that PEZ was not going to be profitable in the United States. The Pez Company has surely learned to change with the times and reinvented itself by adding fruit-flavors to its line and adding character heads to the top of the dispensers. This change ended up becoming a true success because the PEZ Dispenser now became two items in one; a candy item and a toy item. Brilliant!

The original pez dispensers had "no feet" on them and in the late 1980's, PEZ modified its dispenser to have "feet" on the bottom of the dispenser to give it more stability and strength when standing upright.

The Pez Company is divided into two separate entities; PEZ USA and PEZ International. PEZ USA is located in Orange, CT and handles distribution of PEZ in the United States where they package dispensers and make PEZ Cnady. PEZ International is located in Traun, Austria and handles distribution for the rest of the world where they package dispensers and make PEZ Candy. These two separate companies have their own leadership and handle their own licensing agreements, which is why there may be PEZ Dispensers only available in the USA or only in Europe.

The line of PEZ Candy flavors has changed over the years and more recent additions to the standard flavors of grape, strawberry, lemon, and orange are chocolate, cola, and sour flavors.

The age of a PEZ dispenser can be told by the patent number on the stem of the dispenser. Here is an information list:

U.S. Patent Number: BOX Age: Pre-1950's
U.S. Patent Number: DBP Age: 1950's
U.S. Patent Number: 2,620,061 Age: 1952
U.S. Patent Number: 3,410,455 Age: 1968
U.S. Patent Number: 3,845,882 Age: 1974
U.S. Patent Number: 3,942,683 Age: 1976
U.S. Patent Number: 4,966,305 Age: 1990
U.S. Patent Number: 5,984,285 Age: 1999

The PEZ Company does very little marketing of their product, but PEZ can be found in many small and large stores throughout the world. PEZ Collectors, also known as "PezHeads" buy and trade Pez Dispensers via on-line auction sites and at PEZ Conventions held across the United States each year.

Follow this blog where I will showcase my favorite PEZ and what I know about them. And please remember that I am a collector and not a historian, so not all of my blog information may be accurate. Remember that I collect for the fun of it, not to be the sole authority on the PEZ Company or it's products.

Thanks and enjoy my Pez World blog! Let the smiles begin!!!!

The World's Most Bizarre Collections

A Time Magazine On-Line Photo Essay

Photo by: Daryn Slover of the Lewiston Sun Journal/AP

Candy Land

The basement of Ron Hood's home in Lewiston, Maine, has been fitted to display his collection of Pez dispensers and merchandise. He currently has more than 3,000 Pez items but noted in a 2008 interview that "my collection is considered very small in Pez-collector circles."

The above item was brought to my attention via an e-mail message on the Pezheads on-line group that I belong to. Crazy isn't it? I had no idea that I was being featured until it was on the Time Magazine website. I suppose it was a slow news day and they had room to spare, so here I am! It was a good 5 minutes of fame for me and a lot of my friends were so happy that I was featured. But all I kept saying was, I could list a dozen or more Pez Collectors that have larger collections than mine, and are way more bizarre than I am. (Note to PezHeads--- And you know who you are!).

After many people wanting to know what Pez I had, and which are my favorite, I decided to just begin a Pez Web Journey becasue I love Pez for many different reasons, so if you care to read about my Pez addiction, here is the place to begin.

My goal, which is a high bar to set, is to feature one Pez per day and write a little something about that Pez. So I hope you will join my geek-filled world and enjoy the World of PEZ with me! Who knows what this blog will become, but just strap yourself in and enjoy the ride!
